A Conversation with Norman Taylor, principal of
Norman Taylor & Associates

Norman TaylorHow did you get started as an attorney?
"I studied engineering at Arizona State University as an undergraduate, but ended up in the field of law. As a paralegal working with high profile law firms in Washington D.C. and Florida I decided to go to law school. I graduated from Glendale College of Law and sat for the Bar in 1986. I began practicing consumer law in February 1987, and ended up specializing in what has become widely known as the lemon law."

Why the lemon law?
"I grew up in Michigan, the automobile manufacturing capital of the world. I was around the engineers who designed the vehicles, and had many friends whose fathers worked in the assembly plants putting them together. Each year as the new makes and models of American cars were produced, there was a certain excitement associated with – what will be the hit this year? I used to build car models and had an enormous collection. Automobiles were a big part of my life early on. In law school I took a natural liking to the study of consumer rights under the California Commercial Code, which included "goods" or vehicles and a variety of other things that came with warranties. When I finished law school I was introduced to the "lemon law" and saw that it had expanded significantly on the rights consumers had under the Commercial Code. I also learned there were only a handful of attorneys in California that practiced lemon law. So, I found a valuable service to the public and niche I could develop in 1987."

What are the keys to success in your field?
"I would say competency, a willingness to persist in the face of adversity and a true liking for what I do on behalf of consumers, which in my estimation is an extremely valuable service. Maintaining a high profile has been very helpful too. I have authored two books on the subject of lemon law. The first one was in 1991. My most recent book is titled, Lemon Law, The Standard Reference Guide, which I am pleased to say enjoys wide distribution and recognition on a national level."

What makes your firm different from other lemon law firms?
"Honesty is essential. We don’t tell our clients only what they want to hear. Trust is the framework around which a sound client – attorney relationship must be built. You can’t just say this, you have to live it. Over the past 21 years we have handled close to 6,500 lemon law cases for practically every make and model vehicle currently on the road. It is a business, of course, but when you talk to our people you will quickly realize that for us it is much more than a business. We like what we do."

What do you do when you’re not helping people with their defective vehicles?
"I spend as much time as I can with my family. I do a lot volunteer work to various charitable organizations, particularly relating to international human rights efforts. I am President of the Better Golf Association which has an annual fund raising event for Citizen Commission on Human Rights. I take great pride in sponsoring drug education speakers in the public school system, to educate children so they can make an intelligent choice on the issue of drugs and their own survival. I have been a baseball coach for years following my son’s passion for the game and reliving one of my own from childhood."

Client Testimonials

"Thank you for everything

"The dealership kept shoving me out on a crutch, and wouldn't take me seriously without you. Complaining did nothing.

"Thanks for taking the hassle off my shoulders in dealing with my lemon. I barely have time to sleep, let alone deal with problems I shouldn't have to."
